London Borough of Croydon
Jo becomes the first woman to take the helm at the south London borough. Her unanimous appointment follows a three-month stint as acting chief executive. She was previously the council’s executive director of place, overseeing safety, streets development, regeneration and planning, having joined the local authority at the start of 2014. Over the past two and a half years she has been instrumental in driving the borough’s growth and devolution agenda, which secured £350m of investment, and she led on the successful Whitgift development CPO inquiry. She established the council’s new housing company, Brick by Brick, to deliver a thousand new and affordable homes across the borough and has overseen the introduction of the successful Don’t Mess with Croydon clean-up campaign, Landlord Licensing and Connected Croydon schemes. Jo has worked in local government in the UK for the past 17 years. Her extensive experience includes being at the forefront of regeneration in London and bringing investment to neglected areas of the capital, helping to tackle deprivation and poverty among local residents.
